How to do it

  1. Position yourself several strokes from the wall, facing it.
  2. Swim freestyle toward the wall at a controlled pace.
  3. Take your final stroke when one forward reach will bring your hand to the wall.
  4. Extend your finishing arm toward the wall as your body continues forward.
  5. Touch the wall with one hand near water level.
  6. Bring your body to a stop at the wall.
  7. Move aside into a clear space before resetting.

Form cues

  • Keep your head aligned with your spine.
  • Keep kicking through the touch.
  • Reach forward, not across your body.

Common mistakes

  • Gliding too earlyAdjust your final-stroke timing so you reach the wall without a long pause in propulsion.
  • Cramming in a short strokePractice judging the remaining distance earlier so your last stroke has room to finish.
  • Holding your breath throughoutBreathe normally during the approach rather than turning the drill into a breath-holding challenge.

Safety

Misjudging the wall can jam your fingers or load your shoulder through a stiff arm. Approaching too fast can also cause a head impact, especially when fatigue disrupts your timing.

  • Use a lifeguarded pool with a clear approach area and wall.
  • Start slowly before adding speed.
  • Let your elbow bend after contact to absorb your remaining momentum.
  • End the set if fatigue affects your control or you develop pain or breathing distress.

If you cannot comfortably swim freestyle and stop at the wall, practice basic swimming and wall control under qualified supervision first.
