Freestyle Kickboard Kick
The freestyle kickboard kick is a swimming drill that uses a board for support while you practice alternating leg kicks. It trains kick technique, body position, and leg endurance without the arm stroke.
- Beginner
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 30 sec
How to do it
- Hold the far edge of the kickboard with both hands, your arms extended in front of you.
- Push gently away from the wall into a face-down floating position.
- Alternate small upward and downward kicks from your hips, allowing a slight knee bend.
- Continue kicking steadily for the length of the pool.
- Slow your kick as you approach the wall.
- Grasp the wall to finish.
Form cues
- Keep your ankles loose.
- Keep your hips near the surface.
- Exhale whenever your face is underwater.
- Keep your shoulders away from your ears.
Common mistakes
- Pedaling from the kneesLet your thighs lead each kick rather than pulling your knees toward your chest.
- Pushing the board underwaterUse a light grip so the board lies flat on the surface.
- Holding your head too highLook down between breaths, lifting your mouth only far enough to inhale.
Safety
Fatigue or difficulty breathing can leave you unable to reach the wall safely; a kickboard does not prevent drowning. Sustained head lifting or forceful board pressure can also strain your neck or shoulders.
- Practice in a lifeguarded pool with a clear path to the wall.
- Use a distance you can comfortably swim without relying on the board for safety.
- Follow the lane direction and leave space from other swimmers.
- End the interval at the nearest safe exit if you develop pain, dizziness, or unusual breathlessness.
If you cannot float comfortably or recover your footing in the water, learn those skills with qualified swimming instruction before attempting this drill.
