How to do it

  1. Start at the pool wall facing down a clear lane.
  2. Push off with your arms extended in front of you.
  3. Begin easy freestyle with a gentle flutter kick.
  4. Roll your body slightly left as your left hand exits the water and your right arm reaches forward.
  5. Turn your face back toward the bottom before your left hand reenters the water.
  6. Repeat this stroke cycle for the planned distance.
  7. Finish at the wall with a controlled touch.

Form cues

  • Exhale steadily underwater.
  • Inhale during your left arm recovery.
  • Keep one goggle in the water.
  • Keep your kick small and continuous.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting your head forwardLet your head turn with your torso rather than raising your forehead to reach air.
  • Pushing the lead hand downKeep your right arm reaching forward during the breath instead of using it to prop yourself up.
  • Rolling onto your backLimit your rotation to the amount needed for your mouth to clear the surface.

Safety

Mistimed breaths can cause you to inhale water; fatigue or panic can make it difficult to reach the wall safely. Forcing your neck around instead of rotating your body can also cause irritation.

  • Use a lifeguarded pool and follow the lane's swimming direction.
  • Attempt this drill only if you can comfortably swim freestyle for the planned distance.
  • Stop at the nearest safe support if you become breathless, dizzy, or unable to coordinate your strokes.

If turning left causes neck or shoulder pain, choose shorter, easier practice or seek advice from a physiotherapist before continuing.
