German Hang
The German hang is a ring hold with your arms extended behind your body. It develops shoulder mobility and control while placing a loaded stretch on your chest and the fronts of your shoulders.
Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

- Higher injury risk
- Rest 1 min 30 sec
How to do it
- Grasp the rings with your palms facing inward.
- Hang beneath the rings with straight arms.
- Tuck your knees toward your chest.
- Rotate backward into an upside-down tuck with your hips above your shoulders.
- Lower your hips behind you into a hang with your arms behind your torso, stopping within a comfortable shoulder range.
- Hold your body still at this depth.
- Reverse the rotation through a tucked, upside-down position to return to a normal hang.
- Place your feet on the floor.
Form cues
- Keep gentle tension around your shoulders.
- Keep your neck relaxed.
- Breathe slowly throughout the hold.
Common mistakes
- Chasing a deeper stretchUse only the depth you can control without shoulder pain or a pinching sensation.
- Dropping into the bottomLower slowly enough that you can pause at any point.
- Bending your elbowsReduce the depth or support more weight through your feet so your elbows can stay straight without strain.
Safety
Your body weight can overload the fronts of your shoulders and upper-arm tendons if you descend too far or lose control. Losing your grip during the inverted transition can cause a head or neck injury.
- Set the rings low enough for your feet to reach a landing mat at the bottom.
- Practice a feet-supported hold before attempting the inverted entry.
- Have an experienced spotter assist with your first transitions.
- End the hold while you still have enough strength to reverse the movement; exit immediately if a shoulder feels unstable.
If you have shoulder instability, previous dislocations, or current shoulder pain, get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before attempting this hold.
