Glide Swing
The glide swing is a straight-arm swing beneath the low uneven bar, lengthening forward and folding at the hips on the return. It trains shoulder control, grip, and core coordination for gymnastics.

How to do it
- Stand facing the low bar with an overhand grip slightly wider than your shoulders.
- Push off the mat into a straight-arm hang with your legs together in front of you.
- Glide forward with your feet clear of the mat.
- Open your hips near the forward end of the swing to lengthen your body.
- Fold at your hips as you swing back beneath the bar, keeping your legs in front of you.
- Gradually shorten any remaining swings.
- Place your feet on the mat once the swing has nearly stopped.
- Release the bar once you are standing securely.
Form cues
- Keep your ribs drawn in.
- Point your toes.
- Stay active through your shoulders.
- Let the swing flow; avoid jerking.
Common mistakes
- Pulling toward the barReduce the glide's range until you can swing without bending your elbows.
- Opening the hips too earlyKeep your feet forward during the initial glide rather than dropping your legs immediately after takeoff.
- Tucking the kneesMake the return shape by folding at your hips rather than drawing your heels toward your body.
Safety
A slipping grip can cause a fall, while poor clearance can lead to striking the mat or another rail. Excessive swing range or fatigue can also strain your shoulders.
- Check that the bars are secure and landing mats cover the area beneath your swing.
- Confirm that bar height and rail spacing allow your full path without contact.
- Learn with qualified gymnastics supervision and appropriate spotting before practicing independently.
- Start with small glides and end the set before your grip weakens.
If hanging causes shoulder, elbow, or wrist pain, or you cannot support your bodyweight securely, choose a feet-supported preparation and seek qualified advice before attempting full glides.
