Grappling-Dummy Armbar Position

The grappling-dummy armbar position is a controlled transition from mount to a seated armbar setup. It practices arm control, hip rotation, and leg placement for grappling.

  • Intermediate
  • Compound
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Straddle the dummy's torso with both knees on the mat.
  2. Hold one wrist close to your chest.
  3. Plant your free hand on the mat beside the dummy's head.
  4. Pivot around the controlled shoulder until you face across the dummy's torso.
  5. Pass your head-side leg over the dummy's face.
  6. Lower your hips to the mat beside the controlled shoulder.
  7. Position the arm between your thighs with its elbow near your hips.
  8. Release the wrist to finish the repetition.

Form cues

  • Keep your knees close together.
  • Point the dummy's thumb upward.
  • Keep your hips heavy.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing the transitionMove slowly enough that you could pause at any point.
  • Sitting too far from the shoulderKeep the dummy's upper arm snug between your thighs rather than reaching backward for its wrist.
  • Twisting on a trapped footFree your foot before rotating so your knee follows your toes.

Safety

A rigid dummy limb can force your knee or hip into an awkward angle during the pivot. Dropping backward without control can cause a hard landing on your back or head.

  • Use a flat mat with enough clear space for the full transition.
  • Check that the dummy's shoulder and arm can follow the movement without resistance.
  • Practice positioning only; do not bridge your hips or pull the arm into joint extension.
  • Choose a dummy you can reposition without straining.

If hip or knee pain limits the pivot or leg placement, use a smaller pain-free range and seek guidance from a physiotherapist before progressing.
