Half Lord of the Fishes Pose
Half Lord of the Fishes Pose is a seated yoga twist with crossed, bent legs. It practices controlled torso rotation while stretching the hips and the muscles around your trunk.
- Intermediate
- Low injury risk
- No rest timer
How to do it
- Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you.
- Bend your left knee to place your left foot beside your right hip.
- Step your right foot across your left thigh, planting it outside your left knee.
- Place your right hand on the floor behind your right hip.
- Rest your left forearm against the outside of your right knee.
- Rotate your torso to the right.
- Hold the twist with your spine upright.
- Unwind your torso to face forward before releasing your legs.
Form cues
- Breathe slowly into your ribs.
- Keep your shoulders relaxed.
Common mistakes
- Rounding your lower backSit on a folded blanket to make it easier to lift your chest.
- Lifting one hipKeep the bottom leg extended if folding it prevents both sitting bones from staying grounded.
- Turning your neck farther than your chestLet your head follow your torso rather than looking as far behind you as possible.
Safety
Forcing the rotation can strain your lower back or neck. The folded-leg position can irritate your knee if your hip cannot comfortably accommodate it.
- Use your forearm for light contact, not as a lever to deepen the twist.
- Move into and out of the pose slowly.
- Release the pose if you feel sharp pain, numbness, or tingling.
If you are pregnant or have ongoing back, hip, or knee symptoms, ask a qualified clinician about an appropriate modification first.
