How to do it

  1. Stand in a staggered stance with your arms overhead.
  2. Place your hands shoulder-width apart on the mat with your fingers spread.
  3. Kick your back leg upward with a small push from your front foot.
  4. Bring your legs together above you.
  5. Align your ankles, hips, and shoulders over your hands.
  6. Hold your balance with your elbows straight.
  7. Lower one leg toward the floor.
  8. Return your other foot to the floor after the first foot lands.

Form cues

  • Push the floor away.
  • Keep your ribs tucked.
  • Squeeze your thighs together.
  • Use fingertip pressure to control balance.

Common mistakes

  • Kicking up too hardUse a smaller kick so you reach balance without throwing your feet past your hands.
  • Looking forwardLook at the mat between your hands without craning your neck.
  • Holding your breathTake small, steady breaths throughout the hold.

Safety

Overbalancing or buckling arms can cause a fall onto your head, neck, or back. Repeated attempts under fatigue can also overload your wrists and shoulders.

  • Use a firm, nonslip gymnastics mat with clear space around you.
  • Learn a controlled sideways bailout with a qualified spotter before attempting unsupported holds.
  • Practice wall-supported holds until you can support your weight steadily.
  • End the set before your elbows bend or your shoulders start to collapse.

Get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before attempting inversions if you have wrist, shoulder, or neck pain, dizziness, or a condition that limits upside-down activity.
