How to do it

  1. Stand facing the bag with your non-dominant foot forward, feet about shoulder-width apart, and knees slightly bent.
  2. Raise your gloves beside your cheeks with your elbows close to your ribs.
  3. Extend your lead fist straight toward the bag at shoulder height.
  4. Rotate your fist toward a palm-down position as it approaches the bag.
  5. Contact the padded surface through your index and middle knuckles, with your wrist straight behind them.
  6. Pull your lead glove straight back to your cheek to finish the rep.

Form cues

  • Keep your chin tucked.
  • Keep your rear glove home.
  • Exhale briefly with each punch.
  • Stay loose until contact.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching for the bagSet your distance so you can land without leaning forward or fully locking your elbow.
  • Pushing instead of punchingMake contact brief rather than driving the bag into a large swing.
  • Flaring the lead elbowKeep your elbow behind your fist along a narrow, straight punching path.

Safety

Repeated impact can injure your knuckles or wrists if alignment breaks down or you punch harder than you can control. A returning bag can also jam your arm or knock you off balance.

  • Use securely fitted hand wraps and padded training gloves.
  • Check the bag's padding, attachment points, and swing clearance before starting.
  • Begin with light punches; stop the set if alignment deteriorates or you feel hand, wrist, or shoulder pain.
  • Step clear of a strongly swinging bag until it settles.

Choose shadowboxing jabs or seek advice from a physiotherapist before impact work if you have an existing hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder injury.
