Heavy Bag Lead Hook
The heavy bag lead hook is a compact, curved punch thrown with your front hand. It trains rotational coordination and punching power through your chest, shoulders, and trunk.

- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Stand in your boxing stance close enough to reach the bag with a bent lead arm, your lead foot nearer the bag.
- Raise your fists to your face.
- Lift your lead elbow to just below shoulder height.
- Drive your lead fist through a short horizontal arc using hip and torso rotation, with your lead heel turning outward.
- Contact the padded bag at head height with your knuckles, your wrist straight and elbow bent roughly 90 degrees.
- Return your lead fist to your guard.
Form cues
- Keep your chin tucked.
- Rear glove stays at your cheek.
- Exhale sharply on contact.
- Keep your head between your feet.
Common mistakes
- Winding upStart the punch from your guard rather than pulling your hand backward first.
- Pushing the bagMake brief contact instead of continuing to drive the bag away.
- Chasing the swingReset your distance between punches instead of reaching after a moving bag.
Safety
Hard or off-center impacts can strain your wrist, hand, or shoulder, especially as fatigue reduces control. Twisting against a planted lead foot can also stress your knee.
- Use securely fitted hand wraps and padded training gloves.
- Check the bag's mounting and padding, with enough clear space for its swing.
- Allow your lead forefoot to pivot rather than gripping the floor throughout the punch.
- Begin with light contact; end the set when you cannot control your strikes.
If you have hand, wrist, shoulder, or knee pain, practice without impact and seek advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before returning to bag work.
