High-Bar Hang Half Turn

The high-bar hang half turn is a gymnastics skill that changes your facing direction by 180 degrees while hanging. It develops grip strength, shoulder control, and body coordination.

How to do it

  1. Start in a still, two-handed hang with an overhand grip about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Shift your weight toward your designated supporting arm.
  3. Release your other hand from the bar.
  4. Rotate your body 180 degrees beneath the supporting hand using your practiced pivot technique.
  5. Regrasp the bar with your free hand as the turn finishes.
  6. Settle into a controlled two-handed hang facing the opposite direction.

Form cues

  • Keep your legs together.
  • Keep your ribs down.
  • Keep the swing centered.

Common mistakes

  • Kicking into the turnUse a deliberate body turn rather than throwing your legs sideways to create momentum.
  • Regrasping too wideReturn your free hand close to its original hand spacing so you can share your weight between both arms.
  • Forcing the supporting shoulderAllow the practiced hand pivot rather than twisting your shoulder against a locked grip.

Safety

A missed regrasp or slipping supporting hand can cause a fall from the bar. Uncontrolled rotation during one-arm support can strain the shoulder or wrist, especially as your grip tires.

  • Learn the supporting-hand choice, turn direction, and grip transition under qualified gymnastics supervision with a trained spotter.
  • Check that the bar is secure and landing mats cover the entire fall area.
  • Practice low-bar, feet-assisted turns before moving to the high bar.
  • End the set before grip fatigue or loss of swing control.

Use assisted drills if you cannot comfortably support yourself on one arm, and seek advice from a physiotherapist before attempting this skill with shoulder or wrist pain.
