High-Bar Tap Swing

The high-bar tap swing uses timed changes between arched and hollow body positions to build a controlled swing. It trains shoulder strength, grip endurance, and whole-body coordination.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Take an overhand grip on the bar from a stable, raised support.
  2. Lower into a straight-arm hang with your legs together.
  3. Begin a small forward-and-back swing.
  4. On the forward downswing, open your chest into a slight arch as your feet trail behind you near the bottom.
  5. Sweep your feet forward as you pass beneath the bar, rounding into a hollow shape with your ribs drawn toward your pelvis.
  6. Maintain that hollow shape as you rise forward.
  7. Allow your body to swing backward to the rear turning point to complete the repetition.

Form cues

  • Look forward, not up.
  • Keep tension through your midsection.
  • Make the tap quick, not jerky.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling with bent elbowsBuild momentum through body-shape changes rather than a pull-up.
  • Overarching the lower backSpread the small arch through your chest and hips instead of hinging sharply at your waist.
  • Chasing height too soonKeep the swing low until you can repeat the same rhythm without losing body control.

Safety

A missed grip or uncontrolled swing can cause a serious fall. Abrupt loading at the bottom can strain your shoulders, especially when fatigue disrupts your timing.

  • Learn this skill with qualified gymnastics instruction and appropriate spotting.
  • Check that the bar is secure and landing mats cover the fall area without gaps.
  • End the set before your hands slip or your shoulder control fades.
  • Gradually reduce the swing before using an assisted return to a stable support; do not release at height.

Choose a supported preparation or seek professional advice first if you cannot sustain a comfortable straight-arm hang or have shoulder, wrist, or back pain.
