- Beginner
- Low injury risk
- No rest timer
How to do it
- Sit comfortably upright on a chair or cushion.
- Close your lips lightly.
- Inhale gently through your nose.
- Exhale through your nose with a soft, steady hum.
- Repeat this breathing cycle for your chosen duration.
- Return to ordinary breathing for several breaths before finishing.
Form cues
- Let your shoulders soften.
- Leave space between your teeth.
- Feel the vibration around your lips.
Common mistakes
- Forcing a particular pitchUse a pitch that feels natural rather than pushing your voice higher or lower.
- Stretching the exhale too longEnd the hum while you still feel comfortable, rather than waiting until you need to gasp.
Safety
Oversized breaths or forced humming can cause lightheadedness or throat discomfort, especially when you push past your comfortable breathing rhythm.
- Keep your ears unblocked; no special hand position is needed.
- Let each inhale follow the exhale without a deliberate pause.
- Stop if you feel dizzy, short of breath, or pressure in your ears.
If you have recurring dizziness or ongoing ear symptoms, ask a doctor for advice before practicing.
