Incline Treadmill Run
The incline treadmill run is running on a raised treadmill deck to build aerobic fitness while increasing the work your legs do compared with level running at the same speed.
- Beginner
- Moderate injury risk
- No rest timer
How to do it
- Begin walking at a slow belt speed with the incline set to zero.
- Increase the speed gradually to an easy run.
- Raise the incline to a gentle starting grade of 1–3%.
- Maintain your running rhythm for your chosen duration.
- Lower the incline back to zero to finish.
- Reduce the speed to a walk for a few minutes of cooling down.
- Stop the belt completely.
- Step off the treadmill.
Form cues
- Lean slightly from your ankles.
- Look ahead, not at your feet.
- Keep your shoulders loose.
Common mistakes
- Reaching forward with each strideShorten your steps so your feet land close beneath your hips.
- Hanging on the railsLower the incline until you can run with your arms swinging freely.
- Chasing your flat-running speedReduce your speed uphill to keep the effort controlled enough to speak in short sentences.
Safety
Losing your footing on the moving belt can cause a fall, especially when fatigue makes it difficult to keep pace. Increasing uphill running too quickly can overload your calves and Achilles tendons.
- Attach the emergency-stop clip to your clothing before starting the belt.
- Warm up with 3–5 minutes of level walking before increasing to a run.
- Increase either incline or running duration between sessions, rather than both at once.
- End the session if you develop pain, dizziness, or difficulty staying centered on the belt.
Choose level walking or seek advice from a physiotherapist first if you have ongoing calf or Achilles pain, balance problems, or difficulty running comfortably on level ground.
