Inverted Ring Hang

The inverted ring hang is a straight-body, upside-down hold on gymnastics rings. It trains grip, shoulder stability, and body control while you balance beneath the straps.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Start in a still hang from the rings with your palms facing each other.
  2. Draw your knees toward your chest.
  3. Rotate your hips upward between the rings until your torso is upside down.
  4. Extend your legs toward the ceiling.
  5. Hold your ankles, hips, and shoulders in one vertical line, with straight arms and the rings beside your hips.
  6. Tuck your knees back toward your chest.
  7. Slowly rotate your hips downward into an upright hang.

Form cues

  • Squeeze your glutes.
  • Keep your ribs tucked.
  • Breathe steadily through the hold.
  • Keep your thumbs wrapped around the rings.

Common mistakes

  • Holding with bent elbowsUse assistance until you can support the inverted position with straight elbows rather than holding a curl.
  • Resting your legs on the strapsKeep your legs together between the straps so you support the position without leaning against them.
  • Turning your head to look aroundKeep your head aligned with your torso and your gaze still.

Safety

Losing your grip while inverted can cause a head or neck injury. Swinging into position or dropping out under fatigue can strain your shoulders.

  • Inspect the anchors, straps, buckles, and rings before loading them.
  • Place a landing mat beneath you and set the rings with enough clearance for your head throughout the movement.
  • Use a spotter trained in gymnastics inversions while learning the hold, entry, and exit.
  • End the hold while you still have enough grip and control to lower yourself without momentum.

If you have shoulder or neck pain, dizziness when inverted, or a condition that limits upside-down activity, get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before attempting this hold.
