How to do it

  1. Kneel with your right foot forward and your left knee on the mat.
  2. Place your left palm on the mat to the left of your right foot.
  3. Reach your rounded right arm between your knees, with your fingertips pointing back.
  4. Tuck your chin toward your left collarbone.
  5. Roll from the back of your right shoulder diagonally across your back toward your left hip.
  6. Slap the mat with your left palm and forearm as your side lands, keeping that arm roughly 30–45 degrees from your torso.
  7. Finish on your left side with your legs staggered and your head clear of the mat.

Form cues

  • Exhale through the landing
  • Stay compact, not rigid
  • Keep your rolling arm softly rounded

Common mistakes

  • Reaching out to catch yourselfLet your free arm meet the mat beside you rather than planting a stiff arm to stop the fall.
  • Jumping into the rollBegin with a gentle forward weight shift instead of launching yourself off the floor.
  • Ankles or knees collidingLeave space between your legs at the finish rather than crossing or stacking them.

Safety

A poorly directed roll can load your head or neck and cause serious injury. Excess speed or a collapsed rolling arm can also drive your shoulder into the mat.

  • Learn the movement with qualified martial arts instruction before practicing independently.
  • Use a secured combat-training mat with enough clear space for the entire roll.
  • Remove jewelry and hard objects from your clothing.
  • Stay with the low starting position until every landing is controlled; stop when fatigue disrupts your technique.

If you have neck, back, shoulder, or wrist pain, or dizziness with rolling, get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before attempting this exercise.
