How to do it

  1. Sit on the mat with your knees bent and feet flat.
  2. Extend your right leg diagonally forward along the mat.
  3. Place your left foot flat near your right knee, leaving space between your knees.
  4. Tuck your chin toward your chest.
  5. Roll gently over your right buttock onto the broad back-right side of your torso.
  6. Strike the mat palm-down with your right arm about 45 degrees from your torso as your side lands.
  7. Pause on your side with your head off the mat.
  8. Return to sitting using your left hand for support.

Form cues

  • Keep your landing elbow softly bent.
  • Exhale as you meet the mat.

Common mistakes

  • Posting a hand to catch yourselfLet your landing arm contact the mat along its length rather than supporting your falling weight through your wrist.
  • Slapping as hard as possibleUse a controlled strike matched to the small seated fall rather than swinging your arm forcefully.

Safety

Mistimed contact can concentrate impact on your hip, shoulder, elbow, or wrist. Losing head control can cause a head or neck injury, especially when progressing to standing falls.

  • Use a secured, impact-absorbing martial arts mat with clear space around you.
  • Learn the timing through supervised martial arts instruction.
  • Stay with seated practice until your landings are controlled before attempting standing falls or partner throws.
  • End the set if fatigue makes your head control or landing timing unreliable.

Get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before practicing if you have current neck, back, shoulder, wrist, or hip symptoms, or a recent concussion.
