Kettlebell Arm Bar

The kettlebell arm bar is a floor-based shoulder stability exercise in which you roll onto your side while holding a weight overhead. It challenges shoulder control as your upper back rotates.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Lie on your back with the kettlebell beside your right shoulder.
  2. Use both hands to raise the kettlebell above your right shoulder, with your right hand gripping the handle.
  3. Extend your left arm along the floor overhead.
  4. Bend your right knee with your foot flat on the floor.
  5. Roll onto your left side, letting your right knee cross your body while your right arm stays straight and vertical.
  6. Hold the kettlebell steady above your shoulder in the side-lying position.
  7. Reverse the roll to return onto your back.
  8. Lower the kettlebell beside your shoulder using both hands.

Form cues

  • Rest your head on your lower arm.
  • Keep your wrist straight.
  • Breathe slowly through the pause.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing a deeper rollUse a smaller rotation rather than trying to press your chest toward the floor.
  • Bending the loaded elbowChoose a weight you can support without elbow movement.
  • Rolling with momentumMove slowly enough that you could pause at any point.

Safety

Losing control of the kettlebell can drop it onto your head or torso. Excessive rotation under load can also strain the shoulder, especially as you fatigue.

  • Practice the full sequence without weight before adding a kettlebell.
  • Keep the surrounding floor clear of people and objects.
  • End the set at the first sign of shaking or loss of control.
  • Avoid forcing your elbow backward into its end range.

If you have shoulder pain, a history of shoulder dislocation, or difficulty supporting an overhead weight, get advice from a physiotherapist before trying the loaded version.
