How to do it

  1. Stand facing the shield in a staggered stance, with your kicking leg behind you.
  2. Lift your rear knee toward the center of the shield.
  3. Extend that leg into the pad, contacting with the ball of your foot.
  4. Bend your striking knee to withdraw your foot.
  5. Place your foot back in its starting position.
  6. Repeat the kick-and-return pattern for the work interval.

Form cues

  • Keep your hands near your face
  • Exhale briefly on contact
  • Keep your standing knee slightly bent
  • Keep your chest over your hips

Common mistakes

  • Toes hit firstPull your toes back so they do not catch the shield.
  • Reaching for the padAdjust your starting distance so you can contact the target without locking your kicking knee.
  • Rushing between kicksPause long enough to regain your balance before starting the next strike.

Safety

Poor contact or excessive force can strain your toes, ankle, or knee. Unexpected kicks can knock the holder off balance or drive the shield into their body.

  • Use a holder familiar with the shield, braced in a staggered stance with the pad supported against their torso at stomach height.
  • Agree on the strike, intensity, and stop signal; kick only after the holder signals readiness.
  • Check the shield handles and padding, secure your shin guards, and clear space behind the holder.
  • Begin with light contact; stop the interval if the shield shifts or either person loses control.

If you have foot, ankle, knee, or hip pain, use pain-free noncontact practice or seek advice from a physiotherapist before striking.
