How to do it

  1. Stand with one foot forward, feet about hip-width apart, and knees slightly bent.
  2. Raise your hands beside your cheeks with your elbows close to your ribs.
  3. Slide your rear foot backward a short step to move away from an imagined straight punch.
  4. Slide your lead foot backward the same distance to restore your original stance width.
  5. Finish in a balanced guard facing your imagined opponent.

Form cues

  • Keep your chin gently tucked.
  • Stay light, not on tiptoes.
  • Exhale softly as you move.
  • Keep your gaze forward.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning away instead of steppingKeep your upper body over your hips so your feet carry you out of range.
  • Taking oversized stepsShorten your retreat until you can stop at any point without stumbling.
  • Dropping your hands while movingKeep your guard in place throughout the retreat, not just at the finish.

Safety

Backward movement can cause trips or ankle and knee strain if you lose your footing, especially when moving quickly or practicing while tired. Solo practice does not prepare you to safely absorb real strikes.

  • Clear the space behind you before starting.
  • Use a level, nonslip surface.
  • Practice slowly until each repetition feels controlled.
  • Keep this drill non-contact; do not have someone throw strikes at you.

If you have balance difficulties or current ankle, knee, or hip pain, use a stationary guard drill or seek guidance from a physiotherapist before adding footwork.
