How to do it

  1. Sit on the barrel facing the ladder, close enough to reach a rung with your feet.
  2. Hook one foot securely beneath a suitable rung.
  3. Draw your opposite knee toward your chest with your hands behind your thigh.
  4. Straighten the raised leg as far as comfortable.
  5. Walk your hands toward the back of your raised thigh.
  6. Lower your torso backward over the barrel within a range you can control.
  7. Curl back upright using small hand-over-hand steps up your raised leg.
  8. Lower your raised foot to the ladder.

Form cues

  • Keep your hips facing the ladder
  • Exhale through the return
  • Keep your shoulders away from your ears

Common mistakes

  • Yanking on the raised legUse your hands for light assistance rather than pulling yourself upright with your arms.
  • Forcing the knee straightKeep a slight knee bend if straightening the leg pulls your pelvis out of position.
  • Dropping into a deep backbendShorten the rollback until you can reverse direction smoothly without momentum.

Safety

Losing the hooked-foot support or rolling too far can cause a fall from the barrel. Uncontrolled backward bending can strain your lower back or neck.

  • Check that the barrel adjustment is locked and the apparatus cannot slide.
  • Have a qualified Pilates instructor fit the rung position and supervise your first attempts.
  • Keep your upper back supported rather than letting your head and shoulders drop beyond your control.
  • End the set if your supporting foot shifts or you cannot return upright smoothly.

If you have back or neck pain, osteoporosis, or dizziness when leaning backward, get professional guidance before attempting this exercise.
