How to do it
- Sit astride the center of the barrel with one leg on each side.
- Straighten your legs forward along the sides of the barrel.
- Reach your arms forward at shoulder height.
- Round your spine into a controlled C-shaped curve.
- Lift your seat slightly off the barrel by pressing inward with your thighs.
- Lower your seat gently back onto the barrel.
- Return your trunk to upright.
Form cues
- Keep your collarbones wide.
- Reach beyond your fingertips.
- Exhale as you lift.
Common mistakes
- Swinging the arms for momentumKeep your arms steady so the lift comes from controlled trunk and inner-thigh effort.
- Collapsing toward the chestKeep space between your chin and chest rather than folding your head down.
- Lifting unevenlyApply equal pressure through both thighs to keep your pelvis centered.
Safety
Losing your thigh grip or shifting too far forward can cause a fall from the elevated barrel. Forcing the rounded position or straining for height can irritate your back or groin.
- Check that the barrel adjustment locks are engaged and the apparatus cannot slide.
- Use hands-on assistance when first learning to mount, balance, and dismount.
- Keep the hover small rather than chasing height.
- End the set before fatigue makes your leg grip unreliable.
If you have back, hip, or groin pain, or cannot sit securely astride the barrel, seek qualified guidance before attempting the unsupported lift.
