Ladder Barrel Short Box Abdominals
Ladder Barrel Short Box Abdominals uses a seated rollback to train abdominal strength and trunk control. This rounded-back version keeps the movement small rather than extending fully over the barrel.
Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it
- Sit on top of the barrel facing the ladder.
- Hook your feet securely beneath a ladder rung with your knees slightly bent.
- Fold your arms across your chest.
- Round your lower back into a gentle C-shape.
- Roll your torso backward a short distance, keeping your pelvis supported on the barrel.
- Curl your torso forward over your hips.
- Return to an upright seated position.
Form cues
- Keep your shoulders away from your ears
- Exhale as you curl forward
- Keep your knees the same width
- Keep your neck following your spine
Common mistakes
- Arching instead of rollingKeep your ribs drawn toward your pelvis rather than opening your chest toward the ceiling.
- Pulling hard through the feetReduce your backward travel until you can return without tugging against the rung.
- Using momentumMove slowly enough to pause at any point without swinging your arms or torso.
Safety
Losing foot contact or rolling too far backward can cause a fall from the elevated barrel. Forcing the range when tired can also strain your lower back.
- Check that the barrel adjustment is locked and the apparatus cannot slide.
- Adjust the ladder-to-barrel distance so your feet reach the rung without straightening your knees fully.
- Learn mounting, dismounting, and foot placement with in-person Pilates instruction before practicing alone.
- End the set if your seat shifts or you cannot reverse the movement smoothly.
If you have back pain, dizziness, or difficulty getting onto the barrel safely, choose a floor-based version or seek guidance from a physiotherapist first.
