Ladder Barrel Side Stretch
The Ladder Barrel Side Stretch uses the barrel to support a sideways bend, stretching the side of your torso while you practice controlled spinal movement.
- Intermediate
- Moderate injury risk
- No rest timer
How to do it
- Stand between the ladder and barrel with one hip against the barrel and both feet on the floor.
- Place your barrel-side forearm on the curved surface for support.
- Reach your other arm overhead.
- Ease your torso sideways over the barrel.
- Hold the supported sideways bend for the chosen duration.
- Return upright with assistance from your supporting forearm.
- Lower your raised arm to your side.
Form cues
- Breathe into your upper-side ribs.
- Keep both feet grounded.
- Let your neck follow your spine.
Common mistakes
- Turning the chest toward the ceilingKeep your shoulders stacked so the movement stays a sideways bend rather than a twist.
- Forcing a deeper bendReduce the range until you feel a mild stretch rather than a strong pull.
- Shrugging the supporting shoulderKeep space between your supporting shoulder and ear as you rest on your forearm.
Safety
Reaching beyond your supported range can strain your lower back or ribs. A slipping foot or poorly secured barrel can make you lose balance during the bend.
- Check that adjustment locks are secure and the apparatus does not move on the floor.
- Use a standing setup only if the barrel supports your hip comfortably with your feet flat.
- Enter and leave the stretch slowly without bouncing.
- Stop if you feel sharp pain, tingling, or dizziness.
If you have back, rib, or shoulder pain, or difficulty balancing while standing, ask a physiotherapist about a floor-supported alternative first.
