How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart, your lead-side foot forward, and your knees soft.
  2. Raise your closed fists beside your cheeks.
  3. Bend your knees slightly to lower your body toward the imagined target’s height.
  4. Begin turning your lead hip forward.
  5. Drive your lead fist through a short upward arc toward an imaginary abdomen, with your palm facing you and your elbow bent.
  6. Retract your lead fist to your cheek.
  7. Return to your starting stance.

Form cues

  • Keep your rear hand guarding your face.
  • Keep your wrist straight.
  • Exhale sharply with the punch.
  • Keep your elbow beneath your fist.

Common mistakes

  • Winding up below the waistKeep the punching path compact instead of dropping your hand into a large scoop.
  • Reaching for a distant targetImagine the target within close punching range so your head stays over your base.
  • Punching toward head heightFinish the rising path at the imagined opponent’s midsection rather than continuing toward their chin.

Safety

Snapping an unsupported punch to full extension can strain your elbow or shoulder, especially at high speed or when tired. Excessive rotation can also irritate your lower back.

  • Practice in clear space without striking another person or a hard surface.
  • Start at half speed before adding faster repetitions.
  • End the set when you can no longer slow the punch smoothly.

If you have wrist, elbow, shoulder, or back pain, use a smaller pain-free movement or seek advice from a physiotherapist before practicing.
