Lead Roundhouse Kick

The lead roundhouse kick sweeps your front leg across a target without switching your stance first. It trains hip rotation, single-leg balance, and coordinated kicking power.

How to do it

  1. Take a kickboxing stance with one foot forward, your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Shift your weight onto your rear leg without switching your feet.
  3. Lift your lead knee in front of you with the leg bent.
  4. Turn your hips toward the kick, allowing your supporting foot to pivot until its heel points toward the imaginary target.
  5. Sweep your lead shin across the target line by extending your knee with your toes pointed.
  6. Bend your kicking knee to bring the leg back under control.
  7. Return your lead foot to its original position in your stance.

Form cues

  • Keep your hands near your face.
  • Keep your supporting knee soft.
  • Eyes on the target.
  • Exhale as you kick.

Common mistakes

  • Snapping the knee straightLeave a slight bend at the end of an air kick rather than forcefully locking your knee.
  • Leaning far backwardLower your kicking height until you can keep your trunk mostly upright.
  • Spinning past the targetReduce your speed until you can stop the kick without turning your back or taking an extra recovery step.

Safety

Fast rotation over a planted supporting foot can twist your knee or ankle. Uncontrolled kicks can cause falls or injure someone within reach.

  • Clear enough space for the full kick and recovery, including behind you.
  • Use a level surface that lets your supporting foot rotate without slipping.
  • Start with slow, low air kicks before adding height or speed.
  • Do not strike an unprotected partner; learn contact work through supervised pad or bag practice.

If you have knee, ankle, hip, or balance problems, get guidance from a physiotherapist before practicing fast rotational kicks.
