Low-Foot Leg Press
The low-foot leg press uses a lower foot position on the platform to emphasize your quadriceps. It requires enough ankle mobility to lower the sled while keeping your heels planted.
- Beginner
- Compound
- Low injury risk
- Rest 1 min 30 sec
How to do it
- Sit with your back and pelvis supported by the pads.
- Place your feet about shoulder-width apart on the lower platform, with your entire soles in contact.
- Extend your legs to lift the sled off its stops.
- Release the stop handles.
- Lower the sled by bending your knees toward your chest.
- Press the platform away until your legs are nearly straight.
- Re-engage both stop handles after your final repetition.
- Lower the sled onto the stops.
Form cues
- Track your knees over your toes.
- Reverse direction smoothly.
- Exhale as you press.
Common mistakes
- Heels lifting at the bottomMove your feet slightly higher if you cannot maintain full-foot contact through your chosen range.
- Pelvis rolling off the padEnd the lowering phase before your tailbone curls away from the seat.
- Pushing on your thighsKeep your hands on the support grips rather than using them to assist the repetition.
Safety
A low stance can stress your knees or ankles if you force depth beyond your mobility. Excessive load can also pull your pelvis off the pad, placing strain on your lower back.
- Set any adjustable safety catches to stop the sled before it can pin you.
- Test the foot position with a light load before adding weight gradually.
- End the set while you can still complete a controlled repetition.
- Confirm the sled is securely supported by both stops before leaving the seat.
If you have ongoing knee, ankle, or lower-back pain, use a comfortable standard foot position or seek guidance from a physiotherapist before trying this variation.
