How to do it

  1. Adjust the seat or body support so your torso rests securely against the pad with your knees slightly bent.
  2. Place the balls of both feet securely on the platform with your heels free to move.
  3. Grip the handles.
  4. Press through your forefeet to take the load.
  5. Lower your heels slowly into a comfortable calf stretch.
  6. Push through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as you comfortably can.
  7. Return the machine to its resting stop after your final repetition.

Form cues

  • Keep pressure across both forefeet.
  • Keep your toes relaxed.
  • Pause briefly at the top.

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing out of the bottomReverse direction smoothly rather than using a rebound to lift the weight.
  • Pumping with your kneesKeep your knee angle unchanged so the movement comes from your ankles.
  • Using only a tiny rangeReduce the weight until you can move through a full, comfortable repetition.

Safety

Excessive load or forcing the bottom stretch can strain your calf or Achilles tendon. Losing your footing can let the platform move suddenly under resistance.

  • Start with a light test set to check the machine's range and stop position.
  • Keep the platform and your shoe soles dry.
  • Stop the set if you feel sharp pain in your calf or heel.
  • Verify that the load is fully supported before moving your feet off the platform.

If you have an existing Achilles tendon or ankle injury, ask a physiotherapist or doctor before using loaded calf presses.
