Machine Neck Extension
Machine neck extension uses a padded resistance machine to strengthen the muscles at the back of your neck through a small, controlled backward movement.
- Beginner
- Isolation
- Low injury risk
- Rest 1 min
How to do it
- Adjust the seat so the rear head pad contacts the back of your skull rather than your neck.
- Sit upright with your feet flat on the floor.
- Position your head in neutral with your eyes facing forward.
- Press the pad backward with your head through a small, comfortable arc.
- Slowly return your head to neutral.
Form cues
- Keep your shoulders relaxed
- Relax your jaw
- Exhale as you press
Common mistakes
- Arching your torsoKeep your trunk still so the movement comes from your neck rather than your back.
- Leading with your chinDraw your chin slightly inward instead of thrusting it forward or tipping it sharply upward.
Safety
Excessive resistance or forcing your head too far backward can strain your neck or irritate its joints. Fatigue can make this small movement harder to control.
- Follow the machine's adjustment instructions to align yourself with its movement path.
- Start with the lowest resistance and increase only in small increments.
- Stop immediately for dizziness, headache, sharp pain, or pain, tingling, or numbness traveling into your arm.
If you have ongoing neck pain, a previous neck injury, or balance problems, get guidance from a physiotherapist or doctor before using resistance.
