Machine Neck Lateral Flexion
Machine neck lateral flexion is a resisted side bend of the head on a neck machine. It strengthens the muscles that tilt your neck sideways.
- Beginner
- Isolation
- Low injury risk
- Rest 1 min
How to do it
- Adjust the seat so the side pad contacts your head just above your ear.
- Sit upright with your head centered over your torso.
- Grip the handles for support.
- Tilt your head a small, comfortable distance toward the padded side.
- Return your head to the starting position.
Form cues
- Keep your shoulders level.
- Keep your nose pointing forward.
- Breathe freely throughout.
Common mistakes
- Leaning your whole bodyKeep your torso still against the machine's support so the movement comes from your neck.
- Jerking against the padUse a smooth, deliberate pace in both directions without bouncing the weight stack.
- Tipping your chin up or downKeep your chin at the same angle throughout the side bend.
Safety
Excessive resistance or forcing the head too far sideways can strain the neck. Fatigue can make it harder to control the pad's pressure.
- Check the machine's instructions for its side-bending setup before use.
- Start with the lowest resistance; skip the machine if that setting is too heavy to control comfortably.
- Stop for sharp pain, dizziness, headache, or symptoms spreading into your shoulder or arm.
If you have ongoing neck pain, a recent neck injury, or a history of neck surgery, get guidance from a physiotherapist or doctor before adding resistance.
