Maize Bag Lead Hook

The maize bag lead hook is a compact punch with your front hand, timed to a swinging target. It trains rotational coordination, punching control, and upper-body endurance.

  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Stand within bent-arm punching range, with your lead foot forward and your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Bring your gloves beside your cheeks with your elbows close to your ribs.
  3. Track the bag until its center enters your punching range.
  4. Swing your lead fist through a short horizontal arc into the bag, using hip and torso rotation with your elbow bent roughly 90 degrees.
  5. Return your lead glove to your cheek.
  6. Move your head sideways out of the bag's return path with a small bend through your knees and hips.
  7. Settle back into your starting stance.

Form cues

  • Keep your rear glove home.
  • Let your lead heel turn freely.
  • Keep your wrist straight at contact.
  • Exhale sharply on the punch.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing the swinging bagLet the target come to you rather than reaching or leaning beyond your stance.
  • Winding up the hookStart the punch directly from your guard without drawing your hand backward.
  • Overswinging after contactLimit your follow-through so your chest does not turn past the target.

Safety

Hard contact with a dense maize bag can strain your hand or wrist, especially when alignment breaks down. An uncontrolled swing can strike your face or disrupt your balance.

  • Confirm the bag is intended for punching; some maize bags are designed only for slipping drills.
  • Check the suspension and leave clear space around the bag's full swing path.
  • Use secure hand wraps and well-padded training gloves.
  • Keep contact light and let the bag settle before making equipment adjustments.

If you have hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder pain, choose a pain-free no-contact version or seek advice from a physiotherapist before striking.
