Maize Bag Rear Uppercut

The maize bag rear uppercut is a short rising punch with your back hand, timed to a swinging bag. It develops punching coordination, trunk rotation, and control of distance.

  • Intermediate
  • Compound
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Take a staggered boxing stance just outside the bag’s swing path, with your punching side farther back.
  2. Raise your fists to cheek height.
  3. Bend your knees slightly to lower your level.
  4. Turn your rear hip forward with a small pivot on the ball of your rear foot.
  5. Deliver a short rear uppercut into the bag’s lower front as it enters reach, with your palm facing you.
  6. Retract your punching hand to your cheek.
  7. Step diagonally clear of the bag’s return path.

Form cues

  • Keep your wrist straight.
  • Keep your lead hand protecting your face.
  • Finish with your punching elbow bent.
  • Exhale sharply on the punch.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping the hand to wind upStart the punch close to your guard instead of scooping from your waist.
  • Reaching after the bagWait for the next swing rather than leaning beyond your front foot.
  • Lifting with the arm aloneLet the leg drive and hip turn carry the punch upward.

Safety

Hard contact or a bent wrist can strain your hand, wrist, or elbow, especially on a dense maize bag. A poorly timed punch can also send the bag back toward your face.

  • Check that the bag is designed for striking; use a suitable punching bag if it is intended only for slipping drills.
  • Inspect the suspension and leave enough open space for the full swing.
  • Use properly fitted hand wraps and training gloves.
  • Start with light contact and a small swing; stop when fatigue disrupts your timing.

If contact causes hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder pain, practice the rear uppercut without a bag and seek advice from a physiotherapist before resuming impact work.
