How to do it

  1. Stand facing a wall in a staggered stance.
  2. Place the ball between the wall and the muscular area of your upper chest, below your collarbone.
  3. Lean toward the wall until the ball stays in place.
  4. Slowly shift your chest over the ball for the allotted time.
  5. Shift your weight away from the wall to release the pressure.
  6. Remove the ball.

Form cues

  • Let your shoulder relax.
  • Keep your jaw loose.
  • Breathe normally.

Common mistakes

  • Taking large sweeping passesKeep each pass within a small patch of chest muscle.
  • Chasing painful spotsUse mild, tolerable pressure rather than trying to force tenderness to disappear.

Safety

Excessive pressure or prolonged work on one spot can cause bruising or tissue irritation. Pressure near the armpit may irritate nerves and cause tingling or radiating discomfort.

  • Keep the ball off your breastbone, collarbone, shoulder joint, armpit, and breast tissue.
  • Avoid bruised, swollen, injured, or irritated areas.
  • Stop if you feel sharp pain, radiating pain, numbness, or tingling.

Get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor first if you have a recent chest or shoulder injury, recent surgery in the area, or unexplained chest pain.
