Meditation Bench Practice

Meditation bench practice is a supported kneeling meditation that trains attention while you sit upright. The bench supports your hips so you do not have to sit directly on your heels.

How to do it

  1. Place the bench on a firm, level surface.
  2. Kneel with your lower legs beneath the seat.
  3. Lower your hips onto the seat with your feet clear of the bench legs.
  4. Rest your hands on your thighs.
  5. Sit upright with your head over your hips.
  6. Hold this seated position while focusing on the sensation of breathing.
  7. Shift your weight forward onto your hands and knees to lift your hips off the seat.
  8. Rise slowly to standing.

Form cues

  • Let your breathing stay natural.
  • Keep your shoulders loose.
  • Soften your jaw.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing a rigid postureAllow your back's natural curves rather than holding yourself stiffly upright.
  • Treating distraction as failureWhen you notice your attention wandering, gently return it to your chosen focus.

Safety

Prolonged kneeling can put pressure on your knees, shins, and ankles, causing discomfort or numbness. An unsuitable seat height can make this pressure harder to relieve.

  • Use padding beneath your knees and ankles.
  • Choose a bench height that lets you sit without joint strain.
  • End the hold if you develop tingling, numbness, pain, or distress.

If you have knee or ankle problems that make kneeling uncomfortable, use a chair or ask a physiotherapist about a suitable position.
