Breaststroke-to-Freestyle Medley Turn
The breaststroke-to-freestyle medley turn links a two-hand breaststroke finish to a streamlined push-off and front-crawl breakout. It develops wall-turn coordination and leg drive.

- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Swim breaststroke toward the wall at a controlled pace.
- Touch the wall simultaneously with both hands separated.
- Release one hand toward the direction you will swim away.
- Pivot sideways toward your released hand with your knees tucked toward your chest.
- Plant both feet on the wall beneath the surface.
- Bring your remaining hand overhead to meet your leading hand.
- Push away from the wall facing the pool bottom in a streamlined position.
- Surface into front crawl to finish the turn.
Form cues
- Breathe while your face clears the water.
- Keep your head between your upper arms.
- Drive evenly through both feet.
Common mistakes
- Gliding too long into the wallAdjust your final breaststroke cycle so you reach the wall without stalling or squeezing in a short extra stroke.
- Starting freestyle while still on your backComplete your rotation onto your front before the first kick or arm stroke to keep the medley transition legal.
- Staying underwater too farFor a legal freestyle breakout, your head must break the surface no farther than 15 meters from the wall.
Safety
A mistimed approach can cause a hand or head impact against the wall. Forceful push-offs from awkward foot positions can strain your knees or ankles, and prolonged underwater practice increases drowning risk.
- Use a lifeguarded pool with enough depth for your push-off and a clear approach and exit path.
- Practice at low speed with gentle wall pressure before adding pace.
- Never hyperventilate or prolong the underwater phase to test your breath-holding; surface whenever you need air.
- End the drill if pain, dizziness, or loss of coordination develops.
If you cannot comfortably swim breaststroke and front crawl or recover at the wall, practice those skills before attempting the transition.
