Monkey-Bar Traverse

The monkey-bar traverse moves you along an overhead ladder using alternating hand transfers. It trains grip endurance, upper-body strength, and control while hanging.

How to do it

  1. Stand on a stable starting platform beneath the first rung.
  2. Grasp the first rung with both hands about shoulder-width apart.
  3. Lift your feet clear of the platform into a two-hand hang.
  4. Shift your weight onto one arm.
  5. Reach your free hand forward to grasp the next rung.
  6. Bring your trailing hand onto that same rung.
  7. Repeat these transfers until you reach the ending platform.
  8. Place your feet securely on the platform before releasing your grip.

Form cues

  • Keep your shoulders gently engaged.
  • Let your hips follow your reaching hand.
  • Breathe steadily through each transfer.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging wildly between rungsLet excess momentum settle before your next transfer rather than kicking your legs to propel yourself.
  • Skipping rungs too soonUse consecutive rungs until you can consistently secure each new grip without lunging.
  • Hanging from your fingertipsSeat each rung firmly across your palm with your thumb wrapped around it.

Safety

A missed rung or fatigued grip can cause a fall. Abruptly catching your full weight on one arm can strain your shoulder or elbow, especially with excessive swinging.

  • Check that the rungs are secure, dry, and free of slippery residue.
  • Use bars with reachable starting and ending platforms over a clear, impact-absorbing landing surface.
  • Practice short crossings on low bars where you can put your feet down.
  • End the crossing at a safe exit before your grip begins slipping.

If hanging causes shoulder, elbow, or wrist pain, use a feet-supported version or seek advice from a physiotherapist before attempting unsupported transfers.
