No-Foot Clean

The no-foot clean lifts a barbell from the floor to your shoulders without repositioning your feet. It trains explosive leg drive and a quick, balanced catch in a squat.

How to do it

  1. Stand with the bar over your midfoot in a stance that lets you squat comfortably.
  2. Grip the bar just outside your legs with your hips lowered, back flat, and shoulders slightly ahead of the bar.
  3. Lift the bar toward your upper thighs by pushing through the floor.
  4. Extend your hips and knees forcefully as the bar reaches your upper thighs.
  5. Pull yourself beneath the bar with your elbows rotating forward.
  6. Receive the bar across your front shoulders in a squat, with your feet in their starting positions.
  7. Stand fully upright with the bar supported on your shoulders.
  8. Return the bar to the platform.

Form cues

  • Brace before the pull
  • Keep the bar close
  • Let your heels rise naturally

Common mistakes

  • Pulling early with your armsKeep your arms long until your legs and hips finish driving upward.
  • Bar crashing onto your shouldersMeet the bar at its rising height rather than dropping beneath it faster than you can establish support.
  • Rocking onto your toes too soonMaintain pressure through your whole foot until the final extension.

Safety

A missed catch can strain your wrists or shoulders or send the bar into your legs. Excessive load or fatigue can also cause your back to round during the pull or recovery.

  • Practice with an empty bar or light load before adding weight.
  • Secure the plates with collars and keep the platform clear for a dropped bar.
  • Learn to release a missed catch forward while moving clear; do not keep your feet fixed during a failed lift.
  • End the set when your catch becomes unstable or your pull slows noticeably.

If you cannot comfortably hold a front rack or squat in your chosen stance, use a simpler pulling variation and seek guidance before loading the catch.
