Parallel-Bar Back Uprise

The parallel-bar back uprise turns a backward swing from upper-arm support into straight-arm support above the rails. It develops upper-body pushing strength, trunk control, and swing timing.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Take upper-arm support with your upper arms resting along the rails, elbows bent, and hands gripping ahead of your shoulders.
  2. Swing your legs forward beneath the rails.
  3. Sweep your legs backward with your body extended.
  4. Drive your heels upward to bring your hips toward rail height.
  5. Press down through your hands into straight-arm support as the backswing lifts your torso.
  6. Allow your legs to settle beneath you in balanced support.

Form cues

  • Keep your neck neutral.
  • Keep both sides moving together.
  • Stay tall through your shoulders.

Common mistakes

  • Pressing too earlyLet the backswing unload your upper arms before trying to straighten your elbows.
  • Throwing the lower back into an archKeep your abdomen firm so your chest and legs rise together rather than folding at your lower back.
  • Overshooting the supportUse a smaller swing if you cannot control the finish without tipping forward.

Safety

A missed transition can cause a fall between or outside the rails, or an impact against them. Poor timing and fatigue can also overload your shoulders and elbows during the press.

  • Secure the bars at a width that supports your upper arms without forcing your shoulders outward.
  • Cover the landing area with gymnastics mats.
  • Learn the transition with qualified gymnastics instruction and a trained spotter before attempting it independently.
  • Establish controlled upper-arm swings and stable straight-arm support first; stop when either becomes unreliable.

If you have shoulder, elbow, or wrist pain or a history of instability, get advice from a physiotherapist before attempting this skill.
