Parallel-Bar L-Sit

The parallel-bar L-sit is a straight-arm hold with your legs extended forward at hip height. It trains abdominal and hip-flexor strength while challenging your ability to support your body above the bars.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Grip the rails from a stable mounting platform, with one hand on each bar beside your hips.
  2. Press yourself into straight-arm support with your feet clear of the platform.
  3. Raise your legs together in front of you until they are horizontal, keeping your knees straight.
  4. Hold this L-shaped position with your hips between your hands.
  5. Lower your legs under control until they hang beneath you.
  6. Return your feet to the mounting platform.

Form cues

  • Keep your shoulders away from your ears.
  • Breathe steadily through the hold.
  • Keep your chest tall.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging the legs upLift slowly from a motionless support rather than using momentum.
  • Knees bending as you fatigueUse a deliberate tucked hold if you cannot maintain the straight-leg position.
  • Leaning far backwardShorten the hold to keep your torso nearly upright rather than counterbalancing with a large backward lean.

Safety

Losing your grip or arm support on full-height bars can cause a fall. Fatigue or an unstable support position can also strain your wrists, elbows, or shoulders.

  • Check that the bars are locked at a width that lets your arms stay close to your sides.
  • Place secured landing mats beneath the bars and around the exit area.
  • Arrange a stable mounting platform for entry and exit without jumping.
  • End the hold while you still have enough arm strength to return to the platform safely.

If supporting your weight causes wrist, elbow, or shoulder pain, get advice from a physiotherapist before attempting the full-height version.
