Parallel-Bar Shoulder Stand
The parallel-bar shoulder stand is an inverted hold balanced on your shoulders and upper arms between two rails. It trains shoulder stability and whole-body control.

How to do it
- Start in a straddle seat across the bars, with your hands gripping the rails in front of your hips.
- Lower your shoulders onto the rails with your elbows bent outward, maintaining your grip.
- Lift your hips above your shoulders with your knees tucked.
- Extend your legs upward.
- Hold your body vertically over your supported shoulders.
- Bend your knees toward your chest.
- Lower your hips back into the straddle seat with a spotter's assistance.
Form cues
- Squeeze your legs together.
- Keep your neck relaxed.
- Breathe steadily throughout the hold.
Common mistakes
- Arching your lower backTighten your abdomen to bring your ribs and pelvis into line.
- Kicking into the inversionRaise your hips slowly so you can control the balance before straightening your legs.
- Looking toward your feetKeep your head in line with your torso rather than bending your neck to check your position.
Safety
Losing your grip or slipping between the rails can cause a head-first fall and serious head or neck injury. Uneven support or fatigue can also overload your shoulders.
- Use a qualified gymnastics spotter for every attempt until both the hold and return are reliable.
- Secure the bars at a width that supports both upper arms and shoulders without squeezing your neck.
- Place gymnastics landing mats beneath and around the bars.
- End the hold before your arms shake or your shoulder contact starts to shift.
If you have shoulder, wrist, or neck pain, or cannot control a bent-arm support, use a non-inverted progression and seek qualified guidance first.
