Parallel-Bar Upper-Arm Hold
The parallel-bar upper-arm hold is a static gymnastics position with your upper arms resting on the rails. It trains shoulder stability and trunk control while you keep your body suspended.
Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.
- Intermediate
- Higher injury risk
- Rest 1 min
How to do it
- Stand between the rails with your feet on a stable surface within easy stepping distance.
- Grip the rails in front of your body.
- Place your upper arms evenly on the rails with your elbows bent.
- Lift your feet clear of the standing surface.
- Hold your torso upright with your legs together beneath you.
- Return your feet to the standing surface.
- Transfer your weight onto your feet.
Form cues
- Keep your neck long.
- Keep your ribs over your pelvis.
- Maintain steady pressure through both arms.
- Breathe throughout the hold.
Common mistakes
- Collapsing between the shouldersKeep your shoulders actively supported rather than letting your chest sink between the rails.
- Swinging into positionUnload your feet gradually so you enter the hold without momentum.
- Squeezing the rails too hardUse a secure grip without trying to support all your weight through your hands.
Safety
An upper arm slipping off a rail can cause a fall onto the bars or floor. Concentrated pressure on the upper arms and fatigue-related shoulder collapse can cause pain or irritation.
- Lock the rails at a width that gives both upper arms secure contact.
- Cover the landing area with gymnastics mats.
- Use a qualified spotter while learning the entry and exit.
- End the hold before your support weakens, or immediately if you feel pain, tingling, or numbness.
Use a feet-supported version if you cannot maintain the position comfortably, and seek advice from a physiotherapist before trying it with an existing shoulder or upper-arm injury.
