Partner Front-Kick Parry Drill

The Partner Front-Kick Parry Drill practices stepping off a front kick's path and gently redirecting the leg. It trains defensive timing, balance, and coordination through a predictable partner feed.

  • Intermediate
  • Compound
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Face your partner in a staggered fighting stance with your hands raised.
  2. Have your partner lift their lead knee toward their chest.
  3. Have your partner slowly extend a front kick toward your lower torso, stopping short of impact.
  4. Step diagonally off the kick's path as the leg extends.
  5. Guide the side of your partner's shin guard past your torso with an open palm.
  6. Have your partner retract the kicking leg.
  7. Have your partner place the kicking foot back on the mat.
  8. Return to your starting stance and distance.

Form cues

  • Keep your free hand by your cheek
  • Watch your partner's chest
  • Keep your feet from crossing

Common mistakes

  • Swatting the leg hardUse a small guiding motion rather than knocking your partner off balance.
  • Catching the kickKeep your hand open so the leg can pass freely without being held.
  • Reaching down earlyWait for the kick to begin before moving your parrying hand from guard.

Safety

Mistimed contact can jam your fingers or let the kick strike your torso. Forceful redirection can twist your partner's leg or cause a fall, especially when either person is tired.

  • Practice with a trained partner after agreeing on the kicking leg, target line, and stop signal.
  • Check that shin guards are secure and the training mat is clear, dry, and stable.
  • Keep this cooperative: no head contact, counters, unplanned attacks, or increases in force.
  • Stop immediately if either person's balance, timing, or control deteriorates.

If you have hand, wrist, knee, or ankle pain, use a no-contact stepping rehearsal or seek advice from a physiotherapist before practicing.
