Partner Parry and Counter Drill
The partner parry and counter drill pairs a small hand deflection with a controlled, non-contact return punch. It trains defensive timing, balance, and coordination between your guard and punches.

- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Face your partner in a staggered stance, just beyond straight-punch reach.
- Raise your gloves beside your cheeks.
- Have your partner slowly extend the agreed straight punch along a fixed line, stopping short of your face.
- Deflect the approaching glove a few inches sideways with the palm side of your parrying glove.
- Return your parrying glove to your cheek.
- Extend your other glove in a straight counterpunch, stopping well short of your partner.
- Retract your counterpunch to your cheek.
- Reset your starting distance for the next repetition.
Form cues
- Keep your chin slightly tucked.
- Keep your knees soft.
- Watch your partner’s upper chest.
- Keep your wrists straight.
Common mistakes
- Swatting at the punchUse a brief tap rather than swinging your arm across your body.
- Reaching to interceptLet the glove approach your guard instead of leaning forward to meet it.
- Rushing the counterWait until the incoming glove has cleared your punching line before beginning your response.
Safety
Mistimed punches or drifting distance can cause accidental face contact. Forceful parries or poorly aligned punches can strain your fingers or wrists, especially as fatigue reduces control.
- Practice with a trained partner; agree on the feed, response, and stop signal before starting.
- Check that your gloves and wraps are secure and the mat is dry and clear.
- Keep the exchange slow and cooperative, with no added combinations, force increases, or free sparring.
- Stop immediately if either person loses balance, timing, or control.
If you cannot reliably stop your punches or have hand, wrist, or shoulder pain, use solo shadow practice instead and seek professional guidance before partner work.
