Pegboard Climb

The pegboard climb uses alternating peg placements to move your body up and down a wall-mounted board. It builds pulling strength, grip endurance, and control while hanging from one arm.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Grip two pegs seated in low holes with your feet on a stable surface.
  2. Pull yourself up until your feet clear the surface.
  3. Shift your weight onto one peg.
  4. Move the unloaded peg into the next reachable hole, seating it fully.
  5. Transfer your weight onto the newly placed peg.
  6. Continue alternating peg placements up to your chosen height.
  7. Descend by alternating peg placements into lower holes.
  8. Lower your feet onto the starting surface.

Form cues

  • Keep your supporting elbow bent.
  • Keep your hips close to the board.
  • Keep your legs quiet.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching too farUse nearby holes that you can reach without twisting or stretching to your limit.
  • Pulling the peg outwardDirect your weight downward through the supporting peg rather than tugging it away from the board.
  • Dropping onto the next armMake each weight transfer gradual instead of letting your body drop onto the supporting shoulder.

Safety

A loose peg or failed grip can cause a fall, especially as fatigue builds during descent. Sudden one-arm loading can strain your shoulder or elbow.

  • Check the board mounting, holes, and pegs for looseness, cracks, or damage before climbing.
  • Place a suitable landing mat beneath the board with the landing area clear.
  • Practice low traverses or short climbs before attempting greater height.
  • Begin descending while you still have enough grip strength to return under control.

Use foot-supported, low-height practice if you cannot control a one-arm weight shift, and get professional advice first if hanging causes shoulder, elbow, or hand pain.
