How to do it

  1. Sit tall with your legs extended, ankles crossed, and palms on the mat beside your hips.
  2. Roll backward onto your upper back with your hips lifted and legs extended overhead.
  3. Switch which ankle is crossed on top.
  4. Roll forward into a V-shaped balance on your sitting bones, with your legs raised and arms reaching forward.
  5. Clasp your hands behind your back while maintaining the balance.
  6. Lower your legs to the mat.
  7. Fold forward over your legs with your clasped hands lifted behind you.
  8. Return to an upright seated position with your hands beside your hips.

Form cues

  • Exhale as you roll forward.
  • Keep your shoulders away from your ears.
  • Unroll your spine gradually.

Common mistakes

  • Kicking into the rolloverUse abdominal control to lift your hips rather than throwing your legs overhead.
  • Collapsing in the balanceBend your knees slightly if you cannot keep your chest lifted with straight legs.
  • Forcing the arm reachKeep your hands apart if clasping them causes shoulder discomfort.

Safety

Rolling too far onto your neck can place excessive pressure on it. Fatigue or an uncontrolled transition can cause a hard landing on your back.

  • Practice the rollover and V-shaped balance separately before combining them.
  • Keep your weight across your shoulders and upper back, not your head or neck.
  • Keep your head centered throughout the rollover.
  • End the set when you can no longer control the transitions.

If you have neck or back pain, osteoporosis, or difficulty tolerating inversions, choose a simpler exercise or seek advice from a physiotherapist or doctor first.
