How to do it

  1. Stand facing the chair between its handles.
  2. Grasp both handles with your palms facing inward.
  3. Press the pedal down with one foot.
  4. Place your other foot beside the first while supporting your weight through the handles.
  5. Press through the handles to straighten your arms, raising your body as the pedal rises beneath your feet.
  6. Bend your elbows to lower your body back to the starting height with the pedal.

Form cues

  • Keep your neck long.
  • Stack your ribs over your pelvis.
  • Keep steady pressure through both feet.
  • Exhale as you rise.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the springs drive the movementUse a slow, even pace so the pedal follows your body rather than pushing you upward.
  • Elbows spreading wideGuide your elbows backward close to your sides as you lower.
  • Dropping too deeplyShorten the lowering phase before your shoulders roll forward.

Safety

Losing your grip or pedal control can cause a fall from the chair. Excessive lowering or fatigue can overload your shoulders and wrists while they support your bodyweight.

  • Check that the chair cannot slide or tip, the handles are locked, and the springs are securely attached.
  • Use a connected pedal, with spring assistance and handle height matched to your ability; lighter springs are not necessarily easier.
  • Learn mounting and dismounting under qualified supervision before attempting this exercise independently.
  • End the set before your arm support weakens, keeping the pedal controlled while stepping off one foot at a time.

If you have shoulder, elbow, or wrist pain, or cannot confidently support yourself on the handles, choose a floor-supported alternative and seek professional guidance.
