How to do it

  1. Sit on the chair facing away from the pedal, with your feet supported on the floor.
  2. Place both hands on the pedal behind your hips.
  3. Press the pedal downward as you lean your torso backward.
  4. Lift your chest into a small backbend.
  5. Bring your torso upright as you allow the pedal to rise under control.

Form cues

  • Keep your neck long.
  • Let your shoulders stay low.
  • Breathe steadily throughout.
  • Keep equal pressure through both hands.

Common mistakes

  • Hinging only at the lower backReduce the backbend until you can distribute the movement through your upper back rather than pinching your waist.
  • Sliding toward the seat edgeUse a smaller pedal movement so your pelvis stays securely supported.
  • Reaching farther than your shoulders allowLimit the backward lean to a range where your shoulders remain comfortable.

Safety

Leaning backward on an elevated seat can lead to a fall if your hands slip or the pedal moves unexpectedly. Excessive range or poorly matched spring resistance can strain your lower back or shoulders.

  • Have a qualified Pilates professional confirm the seated setup and spring resistance before your first attempt.
  • Check that the chair is stable, springs are secured, and split pedals are connected for two-handed use.
  • Keep someone available to assist during initial attempts.
  • End the set if you cannot control the pedal's return.

Choose a simpler supported extension or seek advice from a physiotherapist first if you have back pain, shoulder pain, or difficulty reaching behind you.
