How to do it
- Hold a secured chair handle while standing sideways beside the chair.
- Press the pedal to its lowest position with the foot farther from the seat.
- Place your other foot fully on the seat, with your toes pointing in the same direction as your torso.
- Shift your weight over the foot on the seat.
- Straighten your seat-side leg to raise your body, letting the pedal rise beneath your other foot.
- Bend your seat-side knee to lower your body until the pedal returns to its lowest position.
Form cues
- Keep your belt line level.
- Track your knee over your toes.
- Stay tall through your torso.
- Breathe steadily throughout.
Common mistakes
- Bouncing off the pedalDrive the movement through your seat-side leg rather than using a quick push from the pedal foot.
- Rolling onto the seat-foot edgeKeep pressure across your heel and the bases of your big and little toes.
- Rising beyond pedal contactLimit your height so your lower foot stays firmly connected to the pedal.
Safety
Losing balance from the elevated seat can cause a fall. A spring-loaded pedal can recoil if foot contact is lost, especially when fatigue reduces control.
- Have a qualified Pilates instructor select the spring setting and assist with mounting and dismounting.
- Check that the chair cannot slide or tip, the handles are locked, and any split pedals are connected for this movement.
- Keep fingers clear of the pedal hinges and springs.
- End the set when you can no longer lower smoothly.
Choose a floor-based version or seek professional advice first if you have balance limitations or knee, hip, or ankle pain with stepping up.
