Pilates Ring Abdominal Curl
The Pilates Ring Abdominal Curl is a controlled crunch with a light squeeze on a ring held above your chest. It trains your abs while you practice steady upper-body control.
- Beginner
- Isolation
- Low injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat, hip-width apart.
- Hold the ring between your palms above your chest.
- Apply light, even pressure to the ring.
- Curl your head and shoulders upward until your shoulder blades just clear the mat.
- Lower your upper body slowly back to the mat.
- Ease the pressure on the ring.
Form cues
- Exhale as you curl up.
- Keep space between chin and chest.
- Keep your pelvis still.
- Keep your elbows slightly bent.
Common mistakes
- Swinging the ring forwardKeep the ring aligned over your chest rather than throwing it toward your knees to gain momentum.
- Squeezing too hardUse only enough pressure to steady the ring without hunching your shoulders.
- Turning the curl into a sit-upUse a small upper-back lift rather than raising your whole torso toward your thighs.
Safety
Lifting too high or continuing after fatigue can strain your neck or aggravate back discomfort. A damaged ring or slipping grip can let the ring spring toward your face.
- Check the ring and padded grips for damage before use.
- Keep your palms centered on the padded grips.
- End the set when you can no longer lower smoothly.
- Stop if you feel sharp pain in your neck, back, or shoulders.
If you have ongoing neck or back symptoms, choose a head-supported curl without the ring or ask a physiotherapist whether this version suits you.
