How to do it
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
- Hold the ring vertically in front of your chest, with your palms centered on the outer padded handles.
- Raise the ring overhead, slightly in front of your head, with your elbows gently bent.
- Press your palms inward to compress the ring slightly.
- Release the pressure gradually until the ring returns to its original shape.
- Lower the ring back to chest height.
Form cues
- Keep your wrists straight.
- Breathe steadily through the squeeze.
- Keep your knees soft.
- Let your shoulder blades rotate upward.
Common mistakes
- Arching your lower backKeep your ribs over your pelvis by stopping the reach before your back starts to arch.
- Pushing your head forwardKeep your ears over your shoulders rather than reaching your chin toward the ring.
- Crushing the ringUse a light, even squeeze that keeps the ring from twisting or buckling.
Safety
Forcing the overhead position can irritate your shoulders, especially as you fatigue. A damaged ring or slipping handle can spring free near your face.
- Inspect the ring and pads for cracks, looseness, or damage before use.
- Keep the movement within a pain-free shoulder range.
- End the set if you cannot maintain secure hand contact or control the ring's release.
Use a chest-height version if overhead reaching is uncomfortable, and seek advice from a physiotherapist if you have persistent shoulder pain or a recent shoulder injury.
